| Hormones effects on glucose metabolism Growth Hormone (GH)
GH is secreted by somatotrophs of anterior pituitary gland. GH secretion is stimulated by GH-stimulating hormone. Other factors which stimulate GH secretion is hypoglycemia, exercise, fasting and increase in some amino acids in blood. GH stimulates gluconeogenesis and antagonizes the action of insulin. Adrenocorticotrophin Hormone (ACTH)
ACTH is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland under control of corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH). ACTH secretion was found to be stimulated by hypoglycemia. Cortisol is the major glucocorticoid synthesized from cholesterol in the adrenal cortex and its secretion is controlled by ACTH. Cortisol was found to promotes gluconeogenesis, liver glycogen synthesis and reduce glucose utilization. Thyroxine
Thyroxin is secreted from the follicular cells in the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones increase gluconeogenesis and accelerate insulin degradation. Insulin
Insulin is secreted by β cells of islets of Langerhas of the pancreas. Various factors stimulate insulin secretion such as glucose, amino acids and gastrointestinal hormones. Insulin activates the transporters of the glucose, facilitative glucose transporter (GLUT) located in the cell surface. Insulin stimulate glycolysis and gylcogen synthesis in the liver. In muscle, insulin increase glucose transport, glucose metabolism and glycogen synthesis. Glucagon
Glucagon is secreted from α-cells of the pancreas. The main actions of glucagon stimulation of glucose production by increased glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. | |
