Background



Cardiac troponin is unique to the heart muscle and is highly concenterated in cardiomyocytes .This protein is released with very small areas of myocardial damage as early as 1 to 3 Hours post injury and level return to normal within 14 to 15 days .

Explanation of Test


This test is used in the early diagnosis of small myocardial infarcts that are undetectable by conventional diagnostic methods. Cardiac troponin levels are also used later in course of MI because they remain elevated for 14 to 15 days post injury .This test is used to monitor healing and reperfusion .

Procedure



Obtain a 5ml venous blood sample in a red - topped tube within hours after onset of chest pain .Observe standard precautions .


Clinical Implications



Positive or elevated cardiac troponin levels indicate small infarcts increases remain for 14 to 15 days .

Interfering Factros



Cardiac troponin levels may possibly by increase in chronic muscle or renal disease and trauma .

Levels are Not affected by orthopedic or lung surgery

Patient Prepation


Explain that the test is a sensitive marker for minor myocardial injury in unstable angina .
